Family Law Basics and Ethical Considerations for Legal Services Volunteers

Scranton Road Ministries C.D.C. 3095 Scranton Road

December 14, 2018 12:00PM - 3:15PM

3 CLE Credits (2 General, 1 Professional Conduct)

This CLE is designed to prepare volunteer attorneys to provide pro se coaching and limited scope representation to low-income individuals. Nationwide, approximately 75 percent of litigants in family and civil cases show up to court without an attorney. As a result, the need for professional advice, pro se coaching, and pro bono representation in family law matters is critical. Instructors will discuss Establishing & Modifying Shared Parenting Plans, Guardian ad Litem & CASA; Abuse, Neglect, Dependency Process; Guardianship of Minors; and Divorce/Dissolution Basics.

This Ethics portion of this CLE will consider the many ethical, legal, and practical challenges that accompany both assisting pro se litigants and providing pro bono representation. We will discuss barriers and resources for pro se litigants, cultural competency, pro bono opportunities, and more.
