Creditor/Debtor Basics & Ethical Considerations For Legal Services Volunteers

This CLE is designed to prepare volunteer attorneys to provide pro se coaching and limited scope representation to low-income individuals. According to The Pew Charitable Trusts, 80% of Americans have some form of debt, with 70% indicating that debt was a necessity in their lives. This CLE will feature panelists including a creditor’s rights attorney, debtor’s rights attorney, and credit repair attorney. Panelists will discuss the basics of communicating with debt collectors, FDCPA violations, credit repair, the life cycle of debt, collectability, and more. The Ethics portion of this CLE will consider the many ethical, legal, and practical challenges that accompany both assisting pro se litigants and providing pro bono representation. We will discuss barriers and resources for pro se litigants, cultural competency, pro bono opportunities, and more.  LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED!
